Campaign responds to the presentation of landmark Cyber Security and Resilience Bill
On Wednesday afternoon, the much-anticipated Cyber Security and Resilience BIll was presented before Parliament.
The Bill is the first primary legislation to mention ‘cyber’ and focuses on amending the Network and Information Systems Regulations 2018.
There is no mention of the Computer Misuse Act in this Bill; however, more positively, recent comments from the Security Minister outline that the Home Office is scoping several proposals to update the act.
In this context, see below for the campaign’s reaction to the presentation of the Bill.
Reacting to the news, Rob Dartnall, Chair of CREST UK and supporter of the Campaign, said:
“The tabling of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill is a positive signal that the government is taking steps to strengthen the UK’s cyber defences. While the Bill does not include Computer Misuse Act reform, it is very encouraging that the Government is currently reviewing concrete proposals to update the Act. This will be essential to ensuring that cybersecurity professionals are supported, not criminalised, for doing their job. We trust that proposals will lead to meaningful legislative change, and we look forward to engaging with the Government to help ensure the UK’s cyber laws are finally brought into the modern age.”
